When it comes to Canadians and anything that is supposed to be a national interest, we are lackeys, suckers and lapdogs. We have not a single car manufacturer that is our own, that is Canadian. Just because we carry the logo of another company, it doesn’t mean it’s Canadian. It’s like calling a McDonald’s in Pakistan a Pakistan enterprise when in fact all the decisions and assets and control stem from another country. GM, Ford, and other companies that occupy Windsor are certainly not Canadian. GM Canada is really just a branch of an American company on foreign soil. That is how and why the GM plant is shutting down.
Why can’t the plant workers simply take over the factory and run it for themselves? Change the name, and use their expertise, their knowledge and skills to manufacture cars that are completely our own, that are Canadian? They don’t have to imitate the American design, from the colour of the shell to the design of the gears in the gearbox. It would be the first-ever completely Canadian car manufacturer ever, with our own designs. Yet thanks to NAFTA we’ve become a workshop for the American car companies. Our entire economy, if it even exists, is foreign owned, turning Canadians into cheap labour. We’ve become too expensive, now, and that’s why the plant’s being closed down, along with any industry baron’s contempt for labour rights.
It is time we have our very own car company, our very own Canadian car corporation, owned by these workers now left with no work or benefits.
Why Can’t We Have Our Own Car Manufacturer?
